A couple of days ago I wandered over to a well-known TH fanfiction community in search for good fic to read. Thinking I couldn't go wrong I picked a story out of the site's top ten list.
The premise of the story was really promising so I started to read but threw in the towel even before the end of the first chapter. What was so off-putting?
The characterizations.
Bill was gay in this story (shocker!) but not just gay but the GAY GAY GAY I'M SO GAY I MAKE A FLAMINGO LOOK BUTCH-kind of gay.
The other characters were presented with the same perverse gusto for stereotyping.
The characters become clichés, parodies which is particularly bad if what you have written was not intended to be a parody.
It's like writing with glitter pen on rainbow paper and drawing a tiny heart on every i.
